Capture crackin coastal shots with our handy tips for beach photography....
1) Sand and salt water are the natural enemy of digital devices. When using your D-SLR on the beach ensure that it is in a good protective case. Alternatively consider using one of the Nikon AW range of cameras which are designed for this type of environment
2) Look for the non-obvious images. For example patterns, colours, shapes and textures in objects such as shells, seaweed, rock formations and the sand. Beaches have an almost endless supply of things to photograph.
3) If you get an overcast day, think about using the macro feature on your camera or a macro lens to explore the beachscape in close-up detail
4) Be patient, for the best images you may have to wait for the right light or adapt your shooting style. See our other photography tips on shooting in hot temperatures.
5) It's best not to change lenses on the beach (see point 1). You may want to think about taking just one lens such as the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR or AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. These are great all-rounders enabling you to capture all sorts of images
6) Use the waves, Choose a fast shutter speed to record them as they actually break on the shoreline, or a slower shutter speed (1 sec or below) which will start to create a misty effect on the waves. If you are shooting slow shutter speed images you will need a tripod.
