Course Contents

On this immersive four-night photography workshop, you'll receive in-depth, hands-on tuition tailored to your experience level, whether you're a beginner looking to gain confidence or a more seasoned photographer aiming to refine your technique. With a small group of just six participants, you'll benefit from plenty of one-to-one guidance, practical demonstrations, and detailed feedback to help you grow as a photographer.

Each day will be focused on chasing the best possible light. The itinerary is designed to encompass everything with sunrise and sunset shoots, as well as visits to renowned locations such as Rannoch Moor, Glen Etive, Blackrock cottage and Buchallie Etive Mor, These stunning locations offer endless opportunities to build a diverse and impactful portfolio.

You’ll explore a wide range of essential skills, including how to master camera settings for landscape photography, working with natural light, using filters effectively, and capturing long exposures to create silky water effects in waterfalls and rivers. You'll also delve into composition techniques, lens choice and how to plan your shoot according to weather and light conditions. If skies are clear, there may even be an opportunity for astrophotography under the clear Highland night sky.

In the event of poor weather, the learning continues indoors with image editing sessions, post-processing tutorials, camera and lens Q&As, and in-depth reviews of your photographs. These sessions will help you refine your images into polished, fine art-quality photographs while deepening your understanding of landscape photography techniques.

This experience is best suited to photographers who already have a working knowledge of the exposure triangle—aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and are looking to develop their skills further in a creative and supportive environment. You’ll return home with not only a stunning collection of images but also the confidence, techniques, and inspiration to take your photography to the next level.

The Nikon School Glencoe workshop is more than just a photography course—it’s a journey into the heart of one of the UK’s most photogenic regions, combining expert instruction with the thrill of adventure and the joy of capturing nature at its most dramatic.

Notes:

This is a Photographic workshop and will we prioritise the opportunity for you to shoot great images above everything. We will plan each day around the weather and light, which means that meal times may be at non standard times and we may start the the day very early and be out until late in the evening if the light and weather permits.

For the workshop, please bring:

A DSLR or Mirrorless camera plus second camera body if you have one

Batteries (and spares)

Memory cards (and spares)

Waterproof cover for camera and lenses

Study Tripod (not a travel tripod)

Lenses:

For landscape photography, lenses such as the 14-30mm, 14-24mm are ideal as are 24-70mm or the 24-120mm. A 70-200mm or 100-400mm could also be useful in certain locations. If you have ND and Grad Filters these will also be useful to help you achieve creative images. For any Astro photography the 14-30mm, 14-24mm or 20mm f/1.8 could all be useful. Although this is primarily a landscape workshop, long lenses such as 180-600mm or 400mm, 600mm or 800mm can also be used if you are interested in photographing any of the wildlife in Glencoe.

We will have a selection of mirrorless cameras and lenses available for you to borrow on the course as well as KASE ND or Grad Filters. However, If you would like to borrow any specific kit for this course please get in contact with us at [email protected] with your request. We require at least 2 weeks notice for kit requests.

Weather:

Winter days in Glencoe can see all the seasons in the space of 5 minutes or brilliant light with a crisp hoar frost covering the landscape. We would suggest you prepare for wet, windy and cold weather. Due to the altitude and mountainous terrain there is also the possibility of snow and ice. Average daytime temperature will be approx 1 to 2 degrees celsius, but can easily dip to -5 on a really cold day.

Clothing:

Please bring appropriate clothing with you such as a windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers. A layered approach to clothing i.e thermal base layer, thermal mid layer / fleece then over jacket is the best approach as it can often get very cold even on a bright sunny day. Warm hats and gloves are essential as are appropriate warm walking boots or wellies.

Accommodation

Is not included in this workshop. The workshop will start and finish each day at the Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe. Either contact the hotel directly to book your own accommodation or one of the other hotels nearby in Glencoe Village.

Arrival & Departure Dates:

Arrival & Departure: Please arrive promptly at the Kinghouse hotel by 5pm for introductions and the welcome briefing on 2nd February 2026 . The workshop will finish officially after breakfast on the morning of Friday 6th February 2026. More detailed information will be provided in the joining instructions sent out closer to the start of the workshop

Group Size:

This workshop is deliberately kept exclusive, with only 6 delegates. Allowing you to benefit from small group ratios and personalised guidance from Neil and Ricci. At certain points on the workshop may may be working in groups of three delegates per guide for some of the locations to ensure the best outcome for great images.

Transport:

Is provided for the duration of the workshop. We will be travelling in comfortable midsize to large 4x4’s or SUV’s. This should allow for comfortable travel conditions and also enough space for all the camera kit.

Fitness:

Most of the photography locations are close to the roadside parking or car parks, but some involve short walks across muddy or unmade paths or cattle tracks. A few locations locations may require a walk along mountain paths. Winter in Glencoe means there will be wet and boggy areas and slippery rocks near the waterfalls. This means that a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required for this workshop. We will be exploring each location for the best light to work with, so be prepared for a bit of walking to ensure you can get good images.

Meals:

During the day we will endeavour to stop at a local cafe or restaurant for lunch or in the morning (depending on the locations we are visiting) we can start at a local supermarket so you can buy lunch, snacks and drinks. In the evenings we will have dinner in the Kingshouse Hotel or one of the restaurants in Glencoe Village. These are not included in the workshop costs. Throughout the day we will also have many comfort stops to use facilities if needed. However, as we are ‘out of season’ even a popular place like Glencoe will be mostly closed so there will be a limited choice for restaurants and cafes, please contact us if you are thinking of booking the course and have any specific dietary requirements.

Other:

Breakfasts, lunches, refreshments, dinners and alcoholic drinks are not included in the workshop price

Joining Instructions:

We will provide further information and a detailed itinerary with the joining instructions closer to the workshop. We will also host a Zoom pre briefing meeting a couple of months before the workshop.
