Experience Day: Low Light - London Southbank - London
05 December, 2017
( 15:00 - 19:00 UK time)

Course Contents

This practical workshop will show you how to shoot the river Thames and buildings in low light situations as well as how to photograph 'light trails' and the photography techniques required to create low light 'ghosts'.

We will begin by meeting at Gallery@oxo, and after a short briefing, we will head out (weather permitting) to see images we can create. The locations we visit are entirely light and weather dependent, and our plan is to make our way along the Southbank towards the Millennium Bridge and Tate Modern, finishing the workshop around the St.Pauls area.

There are so many great locations and iconic buildings to photograph along this route, you will be spoilt for choice. We will start by capturing the last light of the day and twilight images before finally low light night shots. In each situation you'll get practical hints and tips on spotting great photo opportunities, as well as how to tackle focusing, exposure and composition.

Each attendee will also receive a goody bag upon arrival.

You will learn core techniques and correct camera set-up, including:

• What ISO to use
• Getting creative with white-balance
• Which exposure mode to set
• The impact of using different shutter speeds
• Dealing with tricky lighting situations
• Getting the most from Manual mode
• When to use noise reduction

This is a great opportunity to improve your photography skills and ask questions while out shooting images on location.

Please note itineraries may change due to weather conditions and if it does rain, we will find a local coffee shop to continue the workshop by hosting a camera Q&A or editing session until the weather clears

Food and drink is not part of the workshop, but we will endeavor to find time for a refreshment and comfort stop in one of the many places along the Southbank. Feel free to bring food / snacks or your own drinks with you if you want

Notes:

This course will involve a lot of walking, please wear appropriate comfortable footwear and due to the nature of the British weather please ensure you have a waterproof jacket / umbrella in case it rains

Lenses:

Lenses that cover focal ranges of 14 - 200mm will be useful on this workshop. A 14 - 24mm or 14 - 30mm plus either a 24 - 120mm or 24 - 70mm will cover the vast majority scenes that we are likely to encounter.

Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards Exhibition:

Our unique one-week live Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards Exhibition showcases the best of thousands of hilarious wildlife photos submitted from across the globe - be sure to have a look either before or after the low light photography workshop! We promise these captivating images will have you laughing like a hyena. The exhibition will be open for viewing from December 11th to 15th, 2024, between 09:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Admission is FREE.

Nine photographers accompanied Neil in a walk along the south bank of the Thames as darkness fell and the lights of the City came on. Neil’s suggestions for compositions and settings at several different locations were extremely helpful and resulted in a number of interesting images.
